One of India’s most famous buildings, the Gateway of India was built to commemorate the visit of King George V and Queen Mary in 1911. Completed in 1924, it has become a monument to the end of colonialism in India, and is a major tourist attraction.

For atmosphere, chaos, excitement and a great bargain or two, you can’t beat Mumbai’s bazaars. The 150-year-old Chor Bazaar, or Thieves’ Market, is a sprawling flea market offering everything from sacks of rice to antiques, while Crawford Market is housed in a grand colonial building, and is great for buying fruit and spices.
